Shield
The eight mullets show the regimental number and Cavalry tradition ascribing the origin of the pierced mullet to the rowel of a spur. This is further indicated by the horse.
Crest
The bear is the emblem of California, where the regiment was organized in 1866.
The coat of arms was approved on 29 January 1921. It was amended to correct the symbolism on 10 January 1927. The insignia was amended to correct and update the blazon of the shield and crest on 29 September 2014.
